Girl with the Pearl Earring

The Girl with the Pear Earring was a demonstration piece I painted live for a student to follow who expressed an interested in painting with oils.
One of the benefits of painting your own version of a master is that it enables you to follow the way the painter built up the image and this in turn offers an understanding of the method which can then be incorporated in your own original work.
As a portrait artist myself how other portrait artists techniques differ from my own is always interesting and worthy of examination.
Vermeer knew just what to look for to make this piece 'special'. It is seen with his eye and also his heart. He captures the spirit of the model.
