Shottle Hall Reception 30cm x 40cm

It is always nice to be asked to paint something a little different and just before Christmas I was asked to combine my portraiture skills with landscape skills. The request to paint Shottle Hall in Derbyshire and the happy couple who held their wedding reception at that location in time for Christmas 2020, as a surprise for the lovely wife was accepted.

The photograph I was presented with was quite small and not my own( I usually like to photograph the subject myself as lighting of the subject and composition is crucial) however, as it was meant as a surprise I challenged myself to do justice to the event.

I could not alter the couples position on the photo however I could improve on the view of Shottle Hall (which the groom insisted was important and needed to be in the painting ) by visiting the location in Derbyshire and taking a few good photographs to improve the background of the original reference to make the composition more balanced.

The result was that lady in question was delighted with the unique memory her husband and I between us managed to preserve in oils.
